About Halal Diet

halal know how.....help/advise please?
I am having a party for my turning 5 year old son, we have a medium to large group of children attending, we ourselves are not on strict halal diet, however ONE of the children attending is. I rather thought there was going to be a few more requiring halal and that; that would make it easier as my main concern is not making the child feel segregated like here is your food and here is everyone Else's, ive looked up and researched halal and haram additives and the lists seem endless!!! My son wants party pies and sausage rolls etc as his hot party food, i thought perhaps i could purchase some halal meat and make them myself, but not knowing what additives go into pastry( and being limited on time to make entirely from scratch) im concerned purchased pastry may contain haram ingredients, and i just dont have enough knowledge on those to make and informed choice, any ideas would be greatly appreciated, My second concern is for the normal party food like fairy bread, how can i be sure the bread im using is halal, and the birthday cake ( which i will make myself) am i safe with flour milk eggs cocoa icing sugar etc? We were also planning a pinata and im concerned about what sweets he will be able to have...ive heard cadbury chocolate is ok?? My local halal grocery store sells HUGE bags of sweets, if you will forgive my ignorance i was also wondering if there is any real taste difference? in terms of children who can be fussy will the youngsters be able to taste any difference? or am i right in thinking a lolly is a lolly is a lolly? is the main concern for sweets/candy the use of gelatin? or is there more haram ingredients to look out for? ANY help/advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated And a thanks for taking the time to read this mammoth long question!

Why do people think that any sort of diet actually does anything? (including kosher, halal, dieting, etc.)?
For me the most important thing is just being aware when you eat. Paying full attention to the sensations of eating. However, it seems that some people think that some sort of set of rules helps them and the world. Why is this? Why do some religious people think that some animals are O.K. to eat, others not? Why discriminate between God's creations? And since when do dieters succeed in losing weight? At what price do they lose the weight too even if they do it?

Does Allah forgive breaking Halal diet?
I am seriously considering converting to Islam and I think that even if I try to keep halal I will eventually slip up with things like alcohol sometimes - can this be forgiven? Surah Al-Baqarah: 219 "They ask Thee concerning Wine and Gambling, Say: In them is great sin, and some profit, for men; but the sin is greater than the profit.

If someone is unable to understand religion, is it ethical to have them follow the views of their family?
I work with people with autism, some of whom don't speak. We usually support them to follow the religious views of the family (e.g. giving a kosher or halal diet) without the person being able to choose this for themselves or even understand religious or spiritual concepts - is this ethical? These people are adults, not kids; they also make many choices - most choices are easier to inform them about than religion as it is based on belief rather than fact.
